White-tailed Deer - Odocoileus virginianus

White-tailed Deer near the Parking Lot
Sachuest National Wildlife Refuge in Middletown, Rhode Island Island is known for a great place in the winter to see and photograph sea ducks, snowy and short-eared owls on occasion.  Especially in the fall, during the rut, white-tailed deer up plentiful and easy to photograph.  A sunny, but windy day in June, we walked the entire coastline of Sachuest, besides observing 40 species of birds, to white tailed deer gave us photographic opportunity.  One of the deer was just off the path leading to the observation tower near the parking lot.  The second deer was on the path just before Island rocks.  It slowly moved into the woods, but stopped and peered at us to the branches and slowly continued walking.  There was a open area toward which the deer was walking, I focus in this area, hoping to capture shots of the deer as it walked into the area.  However, the deer, instead of walking ran through the area in the two pictures that I obtained had its head hidden in the bushes.  The second picture had all for the deer's legs off the ground and I kept it despite the head blurred in the foliage.  The stair stopped, looked at us through the tangle of branches and then continued up the hill where she again stopped and peered at us.  As I have been saying in the past, be prepared you never know what is going to happen and always look behind you.
