Great Blue Heron at the Herring Run

Now that the herring are running, birds are coming in to feed on them.  I have seen Osprey, Gulls, and Great Blue Heron feeding.

A pair of Great Black-backed Gulls were sitting on a rock minding their own business, when a Great Blue Heron flew and and chased them off the rock.  The Heron spent a little time looking around and then flew into the water, where it started to fish.  It finally caught a Alewife (herring) and swallowed it.  The only problem I had was that the Heron was facing away from me most the time when it was swallowing the fish.  After the Heron finished swallowing the fish, it flew back to the rock and preened.  After finish preening, it took off and flew into the back swamp.
