Flying Willits

Willet in Flight
In a previous blog, I talked how the Killdeer along with the piping plovers use a broken wing display to drawer predators, including people away from their nest and/or young.  Walking down the road at Allens Pond toward the private section at little beach, Willits would fly up Colorado's and circle around us.  They also would chase gulls.  This is their method of protecting their nest and young.  Now we were nowhere near the nests, so we were not harming the nest area but because of the behavior of the Willits, they gave us great opportunities for flight pictures.

Also, if you approach around an area that turns on nesting or have young, be prepared to be divebomb to on or have the terns defecate on you.  All these activities apart of the protection aspect of these animals by learning behaviors both by observation and reading will help you create even better photographs.
