Westport Harbor

Mute swan sitting on the ice
Sunday, after the snow stopped and the sun came out.  We traveled down to Westport Harbor hopefully to to do some photographing of ducks and gulls.  When we arrived, the sky was still overcast.  The tide was outgoing and there was still a lot of ice surrounding the docks.  We were able to see a number of different species of ducks, plus the gulls.  What I did was set the camera on manual, set my speed and aperture and went to auto ISO so I could obtain the correct exposure.

Greater black-back gulls be an opportunistic feeder were trying to get into the bait barrels on the dock to get a free meal.  Herring gulls, however, found snails and scallops to feed on.

A Drake Bufflehead flew by and I was happy to capture one sharp image out of my series.  For tiny bird, they fly extremely fast.  We identified and photographed at the harbor and across on the other side near the Back Eddy and identified many species including Canada geese, common eiders, Bullhead, red-breasted merganser, hooded merganser, American Widgeon, scaup, common goldeneye and a horned Grebe.

If the cold weather keeps up and all the ponds and habits freeze we should see more concentrations of ducks and other birds at locations that have open water, where there is food available.

South Texas Bird Migration Mentor Series - The First Day

The next few posts will chronicle my visit to South Texas, where I attended a workshop that was part of the Mentor Series, who leads worldwide photo treks www.MentorSeries.com.  Their  treks range from 3 days to 7 to 10 days.
Our first day started off the morning with a program that included meeting, the mentors, Bob Smith - DSC_4256 March 09, 2012 NIKON D7000and Layne Kennedy, who  presented a short program about their work and photography style.  The mentors then presented a camera settings question-and-answer session.

In the early afternoon, we departed for the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center in Port Aransas.  In order to reach Port Aransas, you have to travel across the ship channel in a ferry.  The Birding Center is on the outskirts of the sewage treatment plant and has a boardwalk leading out into the lake where you can observe and photograph the wildlife.  There were large numbers of ducks present, including Northern Shovelers, Blue-winged Teal, Green-winged Teal, Ruddy Ducks, and some Mottled Ducks..

We finished off the day photographing at the Copano Bay Fishing Pier, where we were instructed on how to take motion blurs. In all, despite the cloudy and then rainy weather a great time was had on our first day.

Waterfowl

Over the last few days I've been out viewing and photographing the waterfowl in the area. Because of the cold weather. the ponds and coves are starting to ice up, which will congregate the waterfowl and to smaller areas. I am sure as the ponds ice up more and get completely close off the birds will start to migrate southward or more out into the ocean waters.

Jenny's Pond in Plymouth

Despite the temperature being in the 30s, the Sun was shining and there was no wind, so I went down to Plymouth, Massachusetts to do some photography. I went to Jenny's pond, where there was a good variety of ducks, including gad walls, hooded mergansers and buffleheads.

Also, there was the perennial lesser Black-backed gull present..

This photograph helps show the differences between the lesser black-backed gull and the greater black-backed gull. The head is streaked, the legs are yellow and the back is more of a dark gray.
